While campaign and media narratives highlight strong partisan differences in Americans’ reactions to the pandemic and prospects of reopening state and local economies, Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape weekly polling suggests Americans are largely aligned: “North of 80% of both Democrats and Republicans are worried about what’s happening right now with COVID-19,” said Robert Griffin in a May 15 interview on Yahoo Finance. Data also indicates that Americans are likely to proceed with caution as restrictions lift — engaging first in personal activities, such as meeting with friends, that are less likely to have an economic impact.
